We finished up our study of pumpkins this week by visiting the court yard and "picking" our very own mini-pumpkins. Since we didn't make it to the pumpkin patch this year, I thought I could bring the patch to the kids. They had so much fun searching for their very own pumpkin and using their science skills to observe and discuss their observations with a partner. We determined our pumpkins looked orange, dirty, and small and they felt bumpy.
Of course we didn't stop our investigations there. We returned to our classroom and recorded our observations on paper. Kindergarten scientists then used pan balances to determine the mass of their pumpkin measured in wooden blocks, measured the height of their pumpkins in unifix cubes, and measured their pumpkin's circumference in links. We were able to use our newly acquired skills of writing numbers to record our findings.
