Thank you to all of our gracious parents who were able to brave the cold and come along with us to the farm. We couldn't have gone without your help!
Burrrr! It was a chilly day at the farm but that didn't stop us from having an awesome learning adventure. Once we arrived to the farm, we met Farmer Jim. He told us all about the different types of trees he has on his farm. Farmer Jim showed us how many different animals, from birds to bees and deer to bears, use evergreen trees as a home or shelter. He explained the life cycle of an evergreen tree and how he receives the trees he plants as saplings. Thank you to all of our gracious parents who were able to brave the cold and come along with us to the farm. We couldn't have gone without your help!

Over the past few weeks, Mountain View students collected canned food for a local food pantry. As an incentive, the class that brought in the most cans would have a chance to actually deliver all of the food to the pantry and receive a special treat. Our class was inspired to be good citizens in our community and continued bringing in food each and every day of the competition. We brought in over 200 cans! It turned out we won the can competition! The smiles on these kindergarten faces and the kindness exploding in their hearts when we delivered the food was extraordinary. We are so thankful for the experience to give to our community and to have a hands-on learning experience of how we can help others that do not have as much as we do. After reading, the kids helped write about facts related to reindeer that we learned from the book. This organizer helped us think about specific facts and information we know about reindeer. While one special friend was writing on the paper strip, all other kindergarteners were practicing their writing skills on whiteboards. Everyone was so focused and engaged! (We still need to work on those lowercase "b"s and "d"s!) *Arctic In math, we have been discussing data, numbers, and tally marks. so we took a few surveys and charted our data. We then made a reindeer glyph to help us display the data we collected. We made our own non-fiction books about reindeer but we were so busy making them that I forgot to snap some photos. When we go back to school I'll try to remember to take a picture of my example. We finished up our study by reading Wild Christmas Reindeer by Jan Brett (which also happens to be our author for our author study!). During reading, the kiddos discussed the characters and setting of this fiction story. We even talked about our favorite event. Once we were finished, we made our own story map to identify the characters and settings. You can check out a read aloud of this book on YouTube: Although we have had so many awesome learning opportunities, I do believe Thursday was the most exciting day in kindergarten so far. We started our day off with a craft rotation. The kids had a chance to visit each kindergarten classroom and make a holiday craft with every teacher. In our room we made stained "glass" evergreen trees. Lots of fine motaor practice with these gems: Craft day was so much fun but it was also exhausting! After lunch, I checked my mailbox and discovered golden tickets to ride the Polar Express (I forgot to take pictures of the tickets!). The departure time read "1:00pm" so we quickly stopped by the bathroom to get to the train on time. When we entered the "train" we used our imaginations to picture ourselves inside of a real train car. Then, all cozy in our pajamas and rest towels, we cuddled up on the rug with hot chocolate in hand for a viewing of "The Polar Express" movie. We also enjoyed some special treats (thank you parents!) during the "ride". It was near the end of the movie when we heard a knock at the door. It was Ms. Kim from the office. She was delivering a package that had JUST arrived from The North Pole!!! It was still COLD! What could it be? Watching the package with curious eyes. What a precious gift to receive!
I love kindergarteners. SPOILER ALERT! Parents: If you have not opened your gift from your child, do not view these precious photos (yet)! Ah! These kiddos are absolutely ADORABLE! We took photos with holiday props to add to our gift we were making for our parents. The gift was Pinterest inspired (of course) but we added our own twist. Thanks to Mrs. Yoder for having each kid pick out their crayons and hot gluing them to the craft. Also, a big thank you to Mrs. Warford for hole punching and tying on the cute ribbons. Without those ladies this project would not have been possible.
