Learning all about shadows was lots of fun! Kinders enjoyed talking about their prior knowledge about shadows, watching A BrainPopJr video clip about shadows, and listening to a book about shadows. But the fun really got started when the room was dark and kiddos got their hands on flashlights!
Finally, we created a shadow project using black paper and watered down paint. The paint represented a light source- like the sun or a flashlight- as each child used his/her hands to block the "light" from hitting the black paper. When their hands were taken away, a "shadow" was left on the paper. In the spirit of Valentine's Day, kindergartners listened to the book "Happy Valentine's Day, Mouse" by Laura Numeroff. The main character, Mouse, shared many different examples of how he loved his friends. After reading, the kiddos discussed what "love" was to them. It was so fun to hear all of their reactions to "love" and their unique ideas! Finally, each student completed the sentence starter "Love is ___." by writing what love was to them.
I used the iPad app Green Screen by Do Ink to record a video of each student reading their sentence and paired the recording with a free downloaded heart video from Pixabay.com. To put it all together, I used Windows Movie Maker on my laptop (use iMovie on Apple Devices) and added a downloaded sound bite at the beginning and end from Royalty Free Music.
